TREASURER'S
REPORT |
The meeting started with an impromptu JROC brochure folding klatch. Chris Hull finally got the brochures looking pretty and printed up a pile. The brochure introduces our slogan “Enough talking….we’re doing”. Some of the people who wouldn’t or couldn’t fold brochures paid dues. There are all sorts of ways to help out, but remember, even if you won’t work, we still want your money. |
Speaking of money, you probably owe JROC $15. Dues are collected on a yearly basis in January. If you paid in the last couple of months before year-end, you get the next year free. If you don’t pay, you’re not supposed to vote. We need some big guy to be a sergeant-at-arms to enforce our rigid rules of behavior and fetch beers. |
We also have some more money coming in: you still owe $15 for dues, we’re supposed to be getting more money from the HiTech race folks, and Blue Ridge donated $57 they got from gouging unwitting customers. |
ally, that last comment is nasty, mean-spirited and just plain wrong. Blue Ridge Mountain Sports is probably the best outdoor store in the area. They have people who know what’s going on, are outside a lot, and sell good gear that works. They are really helping us out by asking for a donation to JROC when people have their money out. We’ve gotten money and members from their efforts. We should be thanking them instead of making fun of Adrian’s name. |
| PROJECT REPORT | |
This months project is on the Buttermilk trail. Meet Sunday morning at 9AM at the 42nd street parking lot, bring gloves, rakes, shovels, saws, and anything else you think might help. The Mtn. Bike boys have really been working on this section and it should be getting close. |
Steve Ensign is leading the charge to complete the Garland Reece memorial at the Tredegar Street access ramp. We have access to a big hunk of granite that would be placed near the ramp. Jon Montgomery is going to check on a contact with an engraver. |
It has been suggested that JROC buy a mountain bike for the park system to haul a chainsaw or other tools around the trails (maybe with a trailer...gotta check with the main riding man Mr. Bruce). Then Ralph or Peter could get into the trails easier and do light maintenance. The Mountain Bike guys are going to check on the cost of a basic set-up or the possibility of a donation and report back. |
Greg has been working with Mark Pizzini (a local graphic design guy) on a new digital JROC logo. This may end up with T-shirts, hats, decals, and other assorted stuff. |
Vandalism has been reported at the Manchester climbing wall. Dan C is working up a project to clean up and repair the damage. We look for his report next time. |
Another potential project is painting the Reedy Creek building and working around the grounds. We’d like to extend the existing access ramp to the parking lot. Now why it wasn’t done when the ramp was built, I don’t know. It seems like when they first put the ramp in, it should have been extended. It doesn’t look like a very big project though, so let’s get on it when it warms up a little. |
Other interesting things, - The annual outdoor/river gear swap meet at the ARC store on Midlothian is March 29 and we’re going to need volunteers to help run the show. This is another fund-raising effort. JROC will participate in the proceeds |
The Kiosk repair committee is in full contemplation mode. They’re looking at working on most of the park entrance signs. They need to get Jeff Ault out there to figure out what to buy. Steve Ensign said he could probably fab up something. We need to get the stuff and put it in the ground. |
We still haven’t mounted the Eagle donor plaque and Greg feels bad about it. He’s found a place to buy it and we can pay him back now, but it just hasn’t happened. It will, though, and someday soon, when you go over the pedestrian bridge to Belle Isle you’ll see a plaque honoring the Richmond SEAL team who donated lots of money and effort to Park projects. |
We haven’t done anything about the heaters for the plumbing in the Pony Pasture building yet, so we should be thinking about what we’ll need next year. No, we’re not going to heat it for comfort just enough so pies won’t freeze so the bathrooms can stay open all year – nothing going on. |
A project that looks like it’s coming is installation of a changing room at Huguenot Woods. Steve Ensign and Jim J are going to figure out what’s needed and push it along. |
Now, for the scatological portion of the meeting. Someone mentioned that the lattice work around porta-potties was a good project and we should put in more. We will probably sponsoring some portapotties in the spring/summer/fall again. This goes to show how far this group plans ahead. |
The membership committee reported that Brain M and Bob B made it to all of the meetings last year and nobody else has (I may have got that wrong). Susanne is keeping track of things |
Monte McNeil brought a bunch of the finalized Corporate begging tool and passed them out. It looks real good. If we can get some of these in front of money men, we could end up with more money. There was also some noise made about Monte being honored by Dupont for putting up with JROC, but my notes are getting weak. Remember, if you took one, you should really show it to someone with money. |
Adrian T is going to check on getting JROC cards printed. These cards could be used during our projects or in connection with our begging efforts. |
Dave G still hasn’t done anything about the WVRC fundraiser. Brian M has lots of ideas but we don’t know how it fits in with West Virginia rivers. We’re going to have to get in touch with them and find out what they expect. |
Both Henrico and Chesterfield counties have lecture series coming up over the winter months and may be using the JROC mailing and e-mail list to notify potential participants. JROC is not selling the list, we’re just letting them use it as these lectures are interesting to lots of our members. If you don’t want to get these notices, let me know and I’ll tell Uncle Louigi and he’ll get your name off the mailing list. |
These minutes may set a record. It took my daughter more time to read them than it took me to drive to Reedy Creek, attend the meeting, and drive home. This is another good reason to come to the meetings – you don’t have to read these darned minutes. -Dave Gunn |
